Road Trip

While Gigantes can first be seen briefly in Road Trip's opening movie, its first proper appearance is in the "Ch. 6: Zorah, Torn to Pieces" cutscene, which can be viewed after collecting Zorah 's sixth memory; here, Gigantes is depicted in full, with its name stated. Gigantes is part of the result of Zorah's wish for freedom and movement. After crash-landing on Planet Popstar and spending a very long time stuck in isolation, Zorah's wish reached the Fountain of Dreams and eventually Galactic Nova. Nova responded to this wish by creating the Air Ride Machines and sending them to Popstar, where some would survive to pair up with individuals who came to be known as riders. The machines were dormant by default and were activated by their riders' willpower, forming strong bonds with each other. Meanwhile, Nova sent worker drones and materials to Zorah's location. The worker drones dismantled Zorah's helpless body and extracted its core; they then manufactured Gigantes, a machine capable of destroying all life on Popstar, and placed Zorah's remaining will in its core. Like the other machines, Gigantes was dormant, and would not activate until it received an immense amount of willpower. To achieve this, Nova sent a signal to all of the machines from Zorah's location, beckoning them to return to their origin. While many machine and rider pairs were unable to detect the signal, those with strong willpower sensed it and unknowingly went on a journey towards Gigantes. While Zorah's core was being extracted from its body, a fragment of its will escaped and manifested itself as a rider known as Noir Dedede, finally realizing its wish. However, knowing the danger Gigantes could unleash upon the world, Noir Dedede intercepted any incoming riders and destroyed their machines to prevent Gigantes from being activated. Throughout Road Trip, Noir Dedede is encountered multiple times, some being mandatory, while others are optional. The player's rider eventually reaches The Farthest Reach, where Gigantes awaits; after dismounting, the machine sends its gathered willpower to Gigantes, awakening it and setting the final stages of Nova's plan into action. With Gigantes awakened, the player is immediately thrown into battle with it. Gigantes primarily attacks by firing homing missiles while driving around the desolate wastelands. Like ordinary machines, it can also Quick Spin; it's not particularly fast, but covers a large area and will throw off any riders that have landed on it. Also like ordinary machines, Gigantes can Boost Charge, driving forward at high speed and plowing through anything in its way, while also leaving a trail of flames in its wake; this is preceded by the area ahead of Gigantes being highlighted in red as it starts charging up for the boost. Gigantes can also hover into the air and try to crush the player from above; it also produces a shockwave upon landing. When its health gets lower, Gigantes will be able to fire a giant sweeping laser from its top. Gigantes can only be damaged by attacking its red weak points: one on each of its four treads, one on the bridge cockpit, and one for the rear jet nozzles. Once all of the weak points are destroyed, the core becomes vulnerable. Once Gigantes is defeated, it receives heavy damage from several explosions. Gigantes groans out as it collapses, immobilized once again. Seeing an opportunity to finish off Gigantes once and for all, Noir Dedede mounts his custom Wheelie Bike and dashes toward Gigantes. The rider witnesses this and follows on their machine to reach Gigantes before Noir Dedede does. If Noir Dedede reaches Gigantes first, its self-destructs, creating a devastating explosion. If the player succeeds in winning the race, the normal ending will play out: the rider will pierce through Gigantes, causing it to explode. Noir Dedede watches the rider fly off into the distance before disintegrating, leaving his machine behind. A lone flower lies in Gigantes' resting place, where one of its petals flies off in the wind before reaching space. Now with Zorah gone, Nova flies off into space. If the player collects all 22 machines—which is only possible by playing "New Game +" after beating Road Trip once—upon approaching Gigantes, a streak of light will strike the player's machine, causing the rider to fall off. All of the collected machines will then fly up into the air and rush toward Gigantes' core, transforming it into the more dangerous Hyper Gigantes. Now with no machine to fight Hyper Gigantes with, Noir Dedede comes the rescue, summoning the Dragoon from the sky and the Hydra from the ground below. The player is given the opportunity to choose which Legendary Machine to ride, with Noir Dedede riding the other Legendary Machine to fight Hyper Gigantes alongside the player's rider. Hyper Gigantes behaves similarly to Gigantes, using homing missiles, Quick Spins, and Boost Charges to wreak havoc; it also has access to its sweeping laser from the beginning, no longer requiring its HP to be reduced. Hyper Gigantes also has a couple of new attacks: it can now directly attack with its wrecking ball, and can also fire a laser from its core to create a large circle of flames on the ground. Once Hyper Gigantes is defeated by destroying its yellow weak points and core, an explosion causes it to fall onto its back. Noir Dedede, now riding a combined form of the Dragoon and Hydra, flies into Hyper Gigantes' core, creating a bridge of light that reaches out to Galactic Nova. The lion Leo suddenly appears from a bouncing flame amidst the darkness and comes to the rider's aid. With the rider in tow, they head to Hyper Gigantes, where they reach the road to Journey's End.

City Trial

After watching the normal ending of Road Trip, Legendary-Machine Parts for Gigantes become available in City Trial; these are also available in Online by default, regardless of if the player has unlocked them. By collecting the three parts—core, treads, and jet nozzles—the player's machine is replaced by Gigantes, which will fall from above, landing in the Flower Field area of Skyah. Gigantes is easily capable of destroying many of the structures in Skyah, of which would otherwise require a Size Up or Mega Cannon item. Like with other machines, Gigantes can attack by Boost Charging and Quick Spinning, and has the unique ability to fire lock-on homing missiles. Gigantes is a very unorthodox machine, even by Legendary Machine standards. A player riding Gigantes cannot dismount or swap machines, nor can any items be collected; any power-up items that were collected prior to completing Gigantes are also otherwise ignored, having consistent stats at the end of City Trial. While Gigantes is active, the music is replaced with "VS. Gigantes" instead of "Legendary Air Ride Machine." If Gigantes is still active in Skyah when the timer runs out, the Stadium contest is overridden by a unique Stadium: VS. Gigantes; this is the case regardless of the Stadium Prediction, the Prediction Codex prediction, or whether the Stadium Vote rule is on or off. If Gigantes is defeated in Skyah before time runs out, however, all aspects pertaining to the Stadium are relevant again. Due to the nature of Team Battle, Gigantes parts will never appear if this rule is enabled. Gigantes parts will also never appear by turning off VS. Gigantes in Active Stadiums (provided it has been unlocked there). Despite its technical classification as a Legendary Machine (as it is obtained in City Trial by collecting its three Legendary-Machine Parts), it cannot appear in the "A wild legendary machine appeared!" field event. Gigantes also cannot be unlocked as a machine for use in Free Run.

Stadium

VS. Gigantes is its own Stadium contest separate from the VS. Boss Stadiums; while it shares common rules with VS. Boss, it also has notable differences. Instead of having a boss with a specific pattern that the riders fight and defeat, VS. Gigantes is an asymmetrical Stadium contest where the Gigantes rider is a player, thus having their own win condition and no inherent pattern. Similarly to VS. Boss, the win condition for riders fighting against Gigantes is to defeat Gigantes within the 2-minute time period. However, the win condition for the player riding Gigantes is to defeat a certain number of riders; the amount of defeated players is dependent on how many entered the Stadium contest. If time runs out, the Gigantes rider wins by default as well. Unlike VS. Boss, riders not riding Gigantes do not retire if their machines get destroyed; instead, any destroyed machines get fixed and the rider can resume in a similar manner to Dustup Derby and Big Battle. VS. Gigantes is also the only Stadium in the game to allow 16 players simultaneously; all other Stadiums have a maximum player count of 8. While VS. Gigantes can be played in City Trial if Gigantes is completed, unlocking it to play directly in the Stadium requires collecting at least 7 Gigantes parts in offline play. In this Stadium, when in the machine selection, the player can select Gigantes; this is the only time in the game where the player can select it, and it has no specs to display. If the player does not select Gigantes, Player 2 uses it by default; by changing Player 2's machine to something else, any other player can select Gigantes. Only one player can have Gigantes selected; if none of the players have Gigantes as their machine, it will be given to a random player.
